  • When is Fire Season?
There are no set dates for the beginning and end of fire season. Oregon Department of Forestry is the agency who announces the official start and end dates each year—visit www.swofire.com for updates. We also post this to our Facebook page as information is released.
  • Can I open burn right now?
Maybe. Residential burning INSIDE the AQMA is NOT allowed November 1 - February 28 or during fire season. Open Burning is not allowed within the cities of Phoenix and Talent. If you live outside the AQMA, open burning is allowed on declared burn days and if you have a burn permit. Click here for a map of the AQMA The daily burn status is announced each morning. You must call 541-776-7007 and listen to the recording to see if it’s a burn day or not. You must also have a burn permit, which can be found at www.jcfd5.com. Burning of household trash, any garbage, or treated material is prohibited. Note: backyard fire pits and fireplaces are allowed without a permit, and you do not need to call the burn line.
  • Can I mow?
If your grass is green (like a front lawn) or irrigated, you can mow year-round. Restrictions for mowing are related to dried grass. Visit www.swofire.com for updates when fire season is announced. As fire season progresses into summer, any restrictions are posted and explained each time the danger level increases/decreases.
  • When should I start preparing my property for Fire Season?
The earlier you start, the better. Don’t wait until restrictions kick in. We frequently find that people wait too long to mow, and by the time they start, they are prohibited by the restrictions during fire season. Visit https://jcfd3or.gov/wildfire-preparedness/ for resources like wildfire resistant plants and safety tips.
  • Do I need to clear cut my property for wildfire danger?
No. Smart planning can protect your home and still keep it beautiful. People are often surprised at how a few small changes can make the difference to save a house, removing ladder fuels is key and we can help guide you on how to do that.
